A Prayer From A Man Of Integrity

Psalm Twenty Seven

“ The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD. Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me. When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek. Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” (Psalms 27:1-14)

David said, “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” He saw in God both guidance and protection. He recognized God as the one to show him what to do in life. He also saw the Lord as his salvation and defence. He knew that he could depend upon God to be his strength in trouble. With God on his side he had no reason to fear others. In the past evil men had tried to destroy day as a wild animal eating his flesh. God delivered David from Goliath and possibly others. Through all of those troubles God protected him.

David’s one desire was to dwell in the house of the Lord. He knew that God could and would hide him from his enemies. He sang praise to God for deliverance. He does not want to be forgotten by God. David looked upon God as the God of his salvation. God had helped him in the past and He knew that god would not forget or forsake him now! Past help from the Lord gives assurance that there will be future help from Him too. David knew that even if his father and mother abandon him God would never forget him. Think of what would happen to you if you did not believe in the Lord. Those who believe in the Lord should wait patiently for His help!

Confidence in the care of God -- Psalm 27:1-3: Psalm 27 is a picture of dependence on the Lord. There is hope for divine deliverance for the faithful. David had confidence in a successful future because God was his guide or light. His future was certain because God would provide deliverance or salvation for him. God was likewise his defense. David said, “The LORD is my light.” In Scripture light is used to represent the good, pure, powerful and truthful. Light is a picture of God. Light is the antidote to fear or evil. In the past God had caused David’s enemies who attacked him to stumble and fall. David had no reason to fear others because God was with him.

Seeking the Lord for security – Psalm 27:4-6: David thought of how God had blessed him in the past and of how bright future would be with God. David could be the safest and at his best if he was near the “Ark of the Covenant.” This meant that he was in the presence of God. We would all do well to imitate the singleness of purpose of David. “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.” (Psalm 27:4) David’s desire was to behold God! David had confidence that God would exalt him or lift him up above his enemies. David promised, “I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.”

Life is not always easy. Therefore there is urgency in having God with you in life. To become a Christian you must hear the gospel (Romans 10:17), believe in Jesus as the Christ (Mark 16:16), repent of all sins (Acts 17:30), confess Christ as Lord (Romans 10:9-10), and be baptized for remission of sins. (Acts 2:38) After baptism remain faithful to God. (Revelation 2:10) Heaven is too glorious to miss.
