Give Proper Praise Unto The Lord
– Psalm Twenty Nine–
“Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. The voice of the LORD breaketh the cedars; yea, the LORD breaketh the cedars of Lebanon. He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn. The voice of the LORD divideth the flames of fire. The voice of the LORD shaketh the wilderness; the LORD shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory. The LORD sitteth upon the flood; yea, the LORD sitteth King for ever. The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace. (Psalms 29:1-11)
David understood that we must give unto the Lord the glory due to His name. As we observe the power of God in creation and how He sustains everything we must give or ascribe unto Him glory and strength. Even the mighty of the earth or the powerful leaders of the earth must give glory to His name. No one is too mighty to circumvent the need to honor God. It always seems that the besetting sin of the mighty of the earth is to deny or ignore God. We must worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Seeing God as Creator and Sustainer teaches us that He deserves both our obedience and worship. We must do our best in our worship as we honor Him in the beauty of holiness. David often saw the power of God in nature as he watched his sheep. He both saw and felt the storms. He saw the power of nature as a demonstration of the power of the Almighty. David described the voice of the storm as the "voice of the LORD." The first time we heard the voice of God was in nature. He said, “Let there be light and there was light.” The voice of God can be heard by every part of His creation. The Lord will rule forever. David’s conclusion was, “The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.”
Giving praise to God – Psalm 29:1-2: David might have been in a storm or he might have just passed through a storm when he wrote these words. This psalm of nature reminds us of what a mighty God we serve. The fact that God is powerful is seen everywhere. Let us all give praise, honor and glory to God. As we come to see Him as the Almighty God we will want to worship Him in the beauty of holiness. He is worthy, He is worthy, He is worthy of our worship. God is to be worshipped in the beauty of holiness.
A demonstration of God’s power – Psalm 29:3-9: A thunderstorm is used to picture the voice of God and His power. The sound of thunder is overpowering and impressive. The storm should cause us to appreciate the majesty of God. A storm destroys great trees. We see our weakness when the storms come. God is all-powerful and we are powerless. God’s voice shakes the mountains and sends the powerful lightening. “The voice of the Lord makes deer give birth before their time. Forests are stripped of leaves, and the temple is filled with shouts of praise.”
A source of encouragement – Psalm 29:10-11: The storm should cause us to realize that the Lord rules on His throne. He is in control. God is on His throne forever. He does not get voted out. We must pray that the Lord “will give strength unto His people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.” Let us read this little psalm and be reminded of the great power and prominence of God.
Let us learn of the power of the voice of God. We must put our trust in Him and be righteous by means of salvation through the blood of Jesus. Please accept God's wonderful good news that Jesus died for your sins. Will you be baptized into Christ to put on Christ so that your sins can be forgiven by His blood? "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:26-27) Believers contact Christ's saving blood by being baptized into His death. Those who become children of God are then in a position to lift up the excellent name of the Almighty.
