Perilous Times For God's People
– Psalm Three –
One meaning of the word perilous is "liable to hurt or harm." Godly people often have struggles, heartache and misery. There are so many conflicts in life. Many of you who are hearing this message are at this moment facing some very difficult matters or you will soon face sever difficulty. Jesus said, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33) You may well have troubles at hand right now that you are about to plunge into. There are all kinds of sorrows to deal with in this world.
The Peril that David faced. What a sad time it must have been when King David had to flee in order for his life to be spared. This is especially true sense the one from whom he fled was his own son Absalom. He wrote, "LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah." (Psalms 3:1-2) If you are struggling with some great difficulty remember that you have the company of good people like David in your suffering.
The Protection that was available. David said, "But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head." (Psalms 3:3) David did not look to family, friend nor did he look to his army for help. He looked to God! A shield covers, defends and protects the body from danger. David believed that God would cover and defend him against those that rose up against him. We too can depend on God for help. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)
The Prayer that was prayed. David said, "I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah." (Psalms 3:4) Silent prayers are heard but often we feel the need to pray aloud, even if it is just me and God. The voices of David's enemies were directed against him, but David's voice was directed to God. David recognized that God hears and answers the prayer of the righteousness.
The Peace that followed. David said, "I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about." (Psalms 3:5-6) David's faith allowed him to lie down and sleep knowing that God would sustain him. Strong faith in God makes a soft pillow. Many time outward appearances say the battle is lost. But, never underestimate the power of God to help you during your troubles.
The Praise due to God. David recognized the praise that was due to God for His help. He even thanked and praised God in advance of the help. He said, "Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah." (Psalms 3:7-8) The blessings of God are so abundant that they can never be described with words. In Romans 8:31-39 we read, "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:31-39) David felt that it was enough for the Lord to stand up and everything is all right.
To begin your Christian life hear the gospel (Romans 10:17), believe in Jesus (John 8:24), repent of your sins (Luke 13:3), confess Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9-10) and be baptized into Christ. "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:26-27) After being washed in the blood of Jesus at baptism keep yourself among those that trust God for loving help and protection.
