God's Spiritual Success Plan
– Psalm Four –
"Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah. But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD. There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety." (Psalms 4:1-8)
God's spiritual success plan says, "Stand in awe, and sin not." (Psalm 4:4) Paul use of this expression says, "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath." (Ephesians 4:26) If you think you have a right to be angry and you are angry do not allow that to lead you to sin. Sinful acts against God eventually bring misery to the sinner. Rash actions often bring much regret. One good means of avoiding sin is to stand in awe of God.
God's spiritual success plan says, "commune with your own heart upon your bed." (Psalm 4:4) Our hearts can have a great deal to say to us if we will only listen. You will never be wise until you think with your heart. Consider your planned actions by serious self-examination. What will this do to my life and to my conscience? Will this be good or evil? Will this make me a better person or a worse person? Surly a lack of thought is the only way to account for certain actions. "Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways." (Haggai 1:7)
God's spiritual success plan says, "be still." (Psalm 4:4) We should carefully review our planned actions in solemn, silence. Surely thinking people can see the folly of sin. If we will but still our hearts we will recognize the worthlessness of the world. Compose your mind in a serious way, be still. Do your best to keep you spirits calm and quiet. Let us still our heart both in the decision making process and in our recognition of God. "Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth." (Psalm 46:10)
God's spiritual success plan says, "offer the sacrifices of righteousness." (Psalm 4:5) We should offer to God the sacrifice of being angry at our own sins. As we move from the old life to the new we offer to God our own life. We must offer the sacrifice of righteousness and hope in the Lord. We must live uprightly by the truth that we have believed. God's light shines upon us and it shines through us by His truth. If it is not a sacrifice offered from a righteous heart God has no delight in it. "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats." (Isaiah 1:11)
God's spiritual success plan says, "put your trust in the LORD." (Psalm 4:5) It is trust in the Lord that causes us to put our entire life into God's hands. The call is to a complete trust in God, trusting him with our whole lives. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6) The Bible constantly shows us that the smart way to live is to live God’s way. This trust of the Lord involves the total inner self. "Trust the Lord with all your heart."
Will you accept God's wonderful good news that Jesus died for your sins? Will you be baptized into Christ to put on Christ so that your sins can be forgiven by His blood? "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:26-27) Believers contact Christ's saving blood by being baptized into His death. How blessed we are when we make a rational decision to be a servant of God. Life is always better when we walk with God. "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety."
