The Matchless Beauty of the King

Psalm Forty-Five

"My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty. And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under thee. Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad. Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him. And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour. The king's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold. She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace. Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children, whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth. I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever." (Psalm 45:1-17)

This psalm, like others, is set with a poetic title. The title that was given is, "To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, for the sons of Korah, Maschil, A Song of loves." These songs of love are not carnal love but love and respect for the Messiah. There was first the respect and honor given to the king in that day and then the ultimate tribute to the Messiah, the Lord and King. "The King" or “the God whose throne is for ever and ever,” is no mere mortal. His everlasting dominion is not bounded by mountains or rivers. This psalm gives us a look at the matchless beauty of our Messiah. The queen is the bride of Christ or His church.

Before Jesus came Psalm 45 refereed to the king of that day and his queen -- Psalm 45:1-17: The king was the king of Judah. He had been messiahed or he had oil poured upon him. He was anointed by God. The queen is described in the last part of the psalm. Many have thought this psalm was sung unto King Solomon and his queen.

After Jesus came Psalm 45 was applied to Jesus and His church -- Psalm 45:1-17: Jesus is King of kings and the church or all Christians are His bride. These words are all about Jesus for those of us who are Christians. This psalm is about God's grace. (Psalm 45:2) It was by the grace of God that Jesus died for us. Our Savior is the mighty one. (Psalm 45:3) God's power should humble us and make us afraid. (Psalm 45:4) God’s throne is forever. "But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows." (Hebrews 1:8-9) Jesus is God's anointed or the Messiah. He is beautiful and He bring beauty and joy to our lives. His queen or bride stands at His right hand. The church is the bride of Christ. (Revelation 21:2) Jesus loves His church and we must worship and serve him. Those who make up the church are beautiful inside. This, then, beautifies the outside also. (Psalm 45:13) People should and some will praise God forever and ever.

Let us always honor God. "Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre." (Psalms 45:6) To begin your Christian life hear the gospel (Romans 10:17), believe in Jesus (John 8:24), repent of sins (Luke 13:3), confess Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9-10) and be baptized into Christ. "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:26-27) After being washed in the blood of Jesus at baptism be among those who help to make God's name to be remembered in all generations. (Psalm 45:17)
