God is Angry with the Wicked
– Psalm Seven –
"O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:) Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah. Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded. So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes therefore return thou on high. The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me. Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins. My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart. God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready. He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors. Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate. I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high." (Psalms 7:1-17)
David asked God to deliver him from his enemy. He felt that he was being treated unfairly by one that is identified in the inscription as "Cush the Benjamite." I have long thought that this was likely a reference to Saul, who was from the tribe of Benjamin. Saul's heart was dark and sinful and he pursued David to destroy him.
David prayed for God's help -- Psalm 7:1-2: David prayed fervently for God to deliver him from his enemy. He always approached God with great reverence and respect. He said, "O LORD my God." David came to God for refuge from those who would rip him apart. We must walk with God daily in order to call on Him in times of trouble. David constantly maintained a close relationship with God. He knew that if God did not help there would be none to deliver him.
David was an innocent man -- Psalm 7:3-5: David asked God for help based on the fact that he was innocent. Psalm six was a picture of David realizing that because of his sin he deserved to be punished. In Psalm seven David has a clear conscience and he feels innocent. A clear conscience comes as we are obedient to God. "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."(1 John 1:7) David confessed his sins (Psalm 6) and now he stands forgiven. (1 John 1:9)
David asked God to judge the wicked -- Psalm 7: 6-9: David appealed for God to render judgment against those who are his enemies. His appeal was that God would see that justice was done. He asked God to judge the nations and to judge him. He felt that this would show that he was both honest and innocent. He made a special appeal for God to protect all who obey Him. David prayed for an end to "the violence of the wicked." God is a shield and protector of everyone whose heart is right. Concerning those who will not repent God will "whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready."
David knew that God's judgments are fair -- Psalm 7:10-13: He said, "God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day." David was aware of the fact that God would protect the righteous. "You, God, are my shield, the protector of everyone whose heart is right." God is not asleep to good and evil, even in our day. God is both concerned about and involved with what is going on in His world. Sinners may rejoice in safety today but that does not mean they are beyond the wrath of the Almighty. God's "deadly arrows are ready with flaming tips." God's desire is that people will obey Him. Sadly many do not obey and to them the Lord will appear "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power." (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)
David said people are punished because they do evil -- Psalm 9:14-16: People are punished because they chose to do evil. We are what we choose. If we choose evil we are digging a deep pit for ourselves. "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." (Galatians 6:7-8) We are foolish if we think that we will somehow get by with evil.
David praised God for His righteousness -- Psalm 9:17: David said, "I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high." (Psalms 7:17) David had confidence that his prayer would be answered so he praised God in advance of the answer. He believed in the promises of God.
David lived his life with confidence in God. Will you have enough confidence in the Almighty to be baptized into Christ to put on Christ so that your sins can be forgiven by His blood? "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:26-27) Believers contact Christ's saving blood by being baptized into His death. Life is always better when we walk with God.
